The formation meeting of the South Milton Women's Institute was held in South Milton, Prince Edward Island, at the home of Mrs. T. A. Rodd on the evening of 6 July 1936. Mrs. G. A. Coles was chosen as the first President with Mrs. Elmer Duffett as Vice-President and Mrs. Jas. Coles as Secretary-Treasurer. The institute had an ambitious program with various committees struck to organize visits to the sick, support the local school, and establish a girls sewing club. The group organized socials and fundraising drives to support their programs. Over the years they've made many contributions to their community and as well as organizations such as the Red Cross, the T. B. League and the Salvation Army.

Title based on provenance of the fonds
This fonds consists of 9 volumes of record books of the South Milton Women's Institute. The first four volumes contain regular and annual meeting minutes, accounts, and executive and membership lists for the years 1936 to 1957. Volumes six and seven contain meeting minutes and volumes eight and nine are the Treasurer's books which record the accounts and membership payment information. In addition, there is a file of loose annual reports for the years 1958-1985 (except 1959, 1963, 1967 and 1968) which summarize the accounts and list the members.
