Biographical history

The parish of St. Patrick's at Grand River, Prince Edward Island was first populated by Scottish immigrants from Barra and Uist along with some from mainland Scotland. They arrived in the Grand River area in 1792 via Savage Harbour, Charlottetown, and Princetown. In the early years Father MacEachern came once or twice a year to administer the sacraments. A log church and presbytery was built and the first mass held in it in February of 1810. A second church begun in 1816 was replaced with one begun in 1836 under the auspices of Rev. Bernard Donald McDonald, opened in 1839 and completed in 1844. That same year a new presbytery was built under the direction of Father James McDonald. In 1876 the parish received its first resident priest, Rev. M.J. McMillan. In 1890 the church was enlarged and remodelled.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of registers of the baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish from 1837 to 1936. Records of confirmations between 1879 and 1934 are interspersed throughout the baptisms and an index to baptisms up to 1878 precedes the first baptismal register.
