Richmond Bay Presbyterian Parish

Histoire administrative

In 1809, Reverend John Keir was called to Princetown and in 1810 was ordained and inducted into the Princetown parish becoming the first ordained Presbyterian minister on PEI. The Richmond Bay and Bedeque parishes disjoined from Princetown in 1819. Reverend Andrew Nichol, minister at that time, became the first settled minister in the Richmond parish.

By 1853, the Richmond charge extended thirty-three miles from Lot 11 to Traveler's Rest and was one of the two principal Presbyterian stations on PEI at that time. In 1859, the congregation was divided into two charges, Richmond Bay East and Richmond Bay West. In 1873 the two were re-joined to form one congregation, of which Henry Crawford became pastor in 1874. In 1881, the parish was divided into two again.

After the 1925 union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches to form the United Church of Canada, Richmond Bay East became a separate Presbyterian congregation. The Richmond Bay West congregation joined the Tyne Valley Presbyterian church. In 1959, Richmond Bay East became associated with Princetown and formed the Princetown-Lot 16 pastoral charge. Lot 16 disjoined again in 1964, and remained independent until 1968 when it was amalgamated with the North Bedeque Pastoral charge of the United Church of Canada.
