Notice biographique

Alexander McDougall (1760-1843) of Mingary, Scotland, married Elizabeth Campbell (?-1839) daughter of Archibald and Mary Campbell on 21 June 1791. They had ten children: Allan (married Harriet Campbell); Mary (Mr. Tobin); Jane (Reverend M. MacLaren); Ann (William McKay); Colin (Margaret Davidson); Alexander (Elizabeth Moore) Julia (Reverend John MacRae); Archibald; John (Miss McKenzie); and Margaret (Captain James Moore).

Alexander and Elizabeth emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1819 and lived in Pictou before moving to Prince Edward Island in 1823, where they settled in the Belfast area. Allan (1794-1877) returned to Scotland circa 1825 to marry Harriet Campbell (?-1827) of Killundin. Allan and Harriet returned to PEI that same year accompanied by Allan's youngest sister Margaret (1806-1895), who had remained in Scotland to complete her education. Allan and Harriet settled in Flat River and had one son Archibald (1830-?). Allan was a farmer as well as a tax assessor (1847). Both Allan and his father were injured in the Belfast riot which occurred in 1847. Margaret eventually settled in Pownal.

Mary, Ann and Julia all settled in Nova Scotia while John and Alexander moved to the United States. Colin settled in the Miramichi region in New Brunswick and Archibald (1798-1824) was an officer in the 30th regiment of the British Service.

Présentation du contenu

The collection consists of forty-six letters written to or by members of Alexander and Elizabeth McDougall's family from 1793 to 1857. Approximately fifteen of these letters were written to Elizabeth from her Campbell family members in Scotland. From 1819 to 1825, Allan wrote five letters to Harriet Campbell before returning to Scotland to marry her. Other letters consist of correspondence to Allan McDougall from an aunt and uncle in Scotland, as well as letters written between McDougall siblings and their spouses. The collection also contains a promissory note from Allan McDougall to James Anderson (16 November 1847), and notes for a letter to Ms. Myers, donor of this collection, regarding the area in Scotland from where the McDougall family emigrated.
