Biographical history

W. Earle Lockerby, the son of Lloyd Kitchener Lockerby and Jean Sharp, was born in Montague, Prince Edward Island and raised in Hamilton, PEI, where the family moved when he was three years of age. Following a career as a manager in the nuclear power industry, he retired in January 1997 and currently lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick. For many years he has pursued an interest in Island history in general and in the settlement of the Cavendish and Malpeque areas in particular. He is the author of "Three centuries: John and Margaret Lockerby and their descendants" and editor of "Pathways to the present: a social history of Hamilton, Prince Edward Island", as well as a frequent contributor to "The Island magazine".

Custodial history

Scope and content

The collection contains copies of the Lockerby genealogy written by W. Earle Lockerby as well as the history of the community of Hamilton which he edited. It also contains photocopies of a petition and affidavit from the Scottish Record Office pertaining to the voyage of the "Edinburgh" to Isle St. Jean in 1773; an article by Frank Bigwood from "Kintyre magazine" containing a passenger list for the "Edinburgh"; and a covering letter by Earle Lockerby. The latter gives a new interpretation of the date and circumstances of the arrival of the Woodside and Montgomery families on Prince Edward Island. The fonds also contains a copy of the Royal American Gazette and Intelligencer of the Island of Saint John 25 May 1789.
