Custodial history

Scope and content

This collection consists of photographs gathered from various sources by Mrs. Haslam in preparation for the publishing of her book "The Wrights of Bedeque, Prince Edward Island; a Loyalist family", 1978 . William Wright, with his wife and family, was part of a group of Loyalists brought by William Schurman to Prince Edward Island in July of 1784 from Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Wright had travelled to Shelburne in 1783 from Worschester County, New York. The family settled on the north side of the Dunk River in what is now North Bedeque. They grew and prospered, intermarrying with other families in the area, and generally making a considerable impact on their community and the Island.

The major series in the collection contains 111 images of persons, dwellings and maps used to illustrate "The Wrights of Bedeque". Most portraits are of the immediate Wright family but there are some of interconnected families such as the Schurmans, Blacks, Callbecks, etc. A further 8 images were presumably collected for the volume but were not used. A second series includes a portrait of Leith Inman, 2 tintypes and 5 cartes-de- visite of which only one of Fanny Palmer is identified.

Arrangement

Some of the photographs were numbered in a sequence which roughly followed the sequence of illustrations in the published volumes. This pattern was followed and the photographs renumbered in exact sequence to their placement in the book. Old numbers were noted as were the corresponding page numbers
