Heritage Week 2020

 

The theme for Heritage Week 2020 (February 17-23) is 2020 Vision: Bringing the Past into the Future.  ACPEI is celebrating this year with exhibits, Heritage Award ceremonies, and other events scheduled to take place during Heritage Week.  A list of exhibits and events is available below.


Exhibits

  • City of Charlottetown Heritage Office, “Down to Business: The History of Charlottetown’s Oldest Businesses”
    Location: City of Charlottetown Planning and Heritage Department storefront windows, 233 Queen Street, Charlottetown
    Available: February 18-March 23.  Photos and excerpts from the exhibit will be featured on the City’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CityofCharlottetown/) and Twitter account (twitter.com/ChtownPE) beginning on Heritage Day (Tuesday, February 18)

  • Public Archives and Records Office, “New Kid on the Block: The Public Archives Moves to Great George Street”
    Location: Online and via digital displays at select PEI Public Library Service sites across the Island
    Available: Starting February 17 until the end of March 2020
    Note: After 37 years down the street at the Hon. George Coles Building, the Public Archives and Records Office has a new home at the Atlantic Technology Centre.  This exhibit features images and documents from the collection highlighting our new neighbourhood.  The Public Archives is currently closed while we complete the move to our new location.  We look forward to serving our users at our new home when we reopen.    

  • Robertson Library, University of Prince Edward Island, "2020 Vision: Bringing the Past Into the Future: Celebrating Robertson Library"
    Location: Robertson Library lobby, University of Prince Edward Island, 550 University Avenue, Charlottetown
    Available: February 18-23: Tuesday to Thursday, 8:00am-10:00pm, Friday 8:00am-8pm, Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am-11:00pm
    Note: This dispay features images and documents related to the 1975 completion and opening of Robertson Library.  The exhibit coincides with UPEI celebrating its 50th Anniversary through the 2019-2020 academic year.

  • PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation Annual Heritage Awards
    Location: Eptek Art and Culture Centre, 130 Heather Moyse Drive, Summerside
    Date and Time: February 18, 7:00pm

  • City of Charlottetown Heritage Awards and Short Film Screening
    Location: Charlottetown City Hall, 199 Queen Street, Charlottetown
    Date and Time: February 18, 12:00pm
    Note: The City's Heritage Awards honour those who work to preserve and celebrate municipal heritage. The Old Protestant Burying Ground Committee will also debut their short film, The City Under the Ground, directed by Joscelynne Bordeaux. All are welcome.

  • City of Summerside Mayor's Heritage Tea
    Location: Council Chambers, 2nd Floor City Hall, 275 Fitzroy Street, Summerside
    Date and Time: February 21, 1:30pm-3:00pm
    Note: The event includes presentation of the Summerside Heritage and Culture Awards.  All are welcome.

  • St. Peter's Cathedral Archives Photo Identification Hour
    Location: St Peter’s Cathedral, 7 All Souls Lane, Charlottetown
    Date and Time:  February 16, 11:30am–12:30pm
    Note: The St. Peters Cathedral Archives Team (led by Bev White) is preparing a large collection of mystery and/or partially identified images and they would like the public’s help in identifying who or what is in the photo. Please note that many of the pre-1945 images are posted for public viewing on the St. Peter’s Archives website at archives.stpeter.org.

  • Acadian Museum Bilingual Genealogy Workshop
    Location: Acadian Museum of Prince Edward Island, 23 Main Drive East (Route 2), Miscouche
    Date and Time: February 23, 1:30pm (English); 2:30pm (French) *Storm date: March 1 
    Note: Gordon Lavoie will give a presentation on the tools available to research Acadian genealogy.  He will also explain how to use a genealogical database he has compiled, which is available at the Research Centre.  Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.  Please register on or before February 21 by calling 902-432-2880.
