Administrative History

The firm of Prowse Bros. stood on the corner of Richmond and Queen, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, for over eighty years. It was begun as a dry goods store in the late 1870s or early 1880s by Lemuel E. Prowse (1858-1925). Both Lemuel and his brother, and junior partner, Benjamin C. Prowse (1862-1930) were prominent Charlottetown citizens, serving in provincial and federal governments. B.C. Prowse was also Mayor of the City of Charlottetown from 1908-1910. The business flourished and over the years expanded its premises south on Queen and east on Richmond Streets. Merchandise included men's furnishings, boots and shoes, carpets, etc. It continued operation until the 1960s.
