Lot 1 and 2 Farmers Institute

Notice biographique

Farmers Institutes on Prince Edward Island began with the passing of the "Act for the Encouragement of Agriculture" in 1901. Each was to be composed of at least 30 members with a maximum of fifty. There were to be no more than 5 institutes in one electoral district. The objectives of these institutes was to promote agricultural education, disseminate information with regard to improved agricultural practices, provide for the introduction of improved breeding stock, new varieties of seeds, etc., and to provide yearly estimates of crop production. Each was to hold two public meetings a year where papers were to be read on topics relating to agriculture. Yearly grants were available from the Department of Agriculture as were special grants for the introduction of purebred stock. The institutes afforded an opportunity for farmers to act cooperatively in the building of warehouses, the breeding of better livestock, and the marketing of their produce, to the advantage of the individual farmers involved.

The Lot 1 & 2 Farmers Institute appears to have operated from before 1913 to 1956. It was also referred to as the Tignish Farmers Institute.
