History
The Junior Red Cross was first organized in Prince Edward Island in 1921. With its motto "I serve" and its aims of "health, service, and understanding", it was encouraged by the Department of Education as an "in school" activity with membership reaching an all-time high of 21,000 in Grades 1-12 in 1967. The name was changed in 1965 to Red Cross Youth which took in Junior Red Cross in elementary, secondary college and alumni levels. The program provided leadership training, development of good attitudes and building of character through participation in health service, international friendship and self-help assistance.
