James Johnston owned a store and warehouse in Annandale. James had been in business with Daniel MacAulay since 1855 under the name MacAulay and Johnston. James and Edwin McFarlane worked together for about ten years and ran the store under name Johnston and McFarlane. When James died in 1886, Edwin inherited the store.
