Donald Farquharson was born on July 27, 1834 to John Farquharson and Mary Stewart of Mermaid, Prince Edward Island. He was educated locally in Mermaid and at the Central Academy and Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. Upon completion of his education, Farquharson worked as a teacher for a number of years. In 1860 he married Dopson May Edwards Smith of Pownal. They had three children (Laura, Seymour and Alfred) before Mrs. Farquharson
