Name of creator

Stewart, Alexander (ca. 1777-ca. 1861)

Biographical history

Alexander Stewart was born in Glendale, Perthshire, Scotland circa 1777. He emigrated to Prince Edward Island, arriving aboard the Romulus in 1805. A letter written to his family that same year indicates that he originally settled in the Belfast area and worked in a mill belonging to Lord Selkirk. In a sale of lands by Lord Selkirk in 1807, Alexander purchased 100 acres of land. The PEI Register advertised this land in Belfast, on which a farm and house was located, to be sold by Alexander Stewart, Tailor, in 1824. After selling his land in Belfast, Alexander moved to the Cardigan area. By 1841, Alexander was listed as living in Lot 52, and in 1861, in Lot 50. Alexander married Isabella MacLaren of Charlottetown on 23 September 1813. They had at least two children: Janet (1823-?) and Elizabeth (1827-?)

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a three page transcription of a letter written by Alexander Stewart on 12 October 1805, to his father, James Stewart in Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander's letter, postmarked from Charlottetown, was written in response to a letter written by his family in February of that same year. Alexander writes of ships arriving in PEI with emigrants from Belfast and the Isle of Skye. Stewart offers to pay for the passage of his brother John, and encourages his father James to emigrate to PEI for the quality of life it offers and the availability of land.
