Biographical history
The organizational meeting for the Charlottetown Christian Council was held on 12 March 1972 at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Present were representatives from Trinity United, First Baptist, the Kirk of St. James, St. Peters Cathedral and Christian Reformed, as well as Fathers Arsenault and Faber MacDonald. A constitution was drafted outlining that the purpose of the organization was to give expression to the fundamental unity of the several Christian Communions involved in the Council; to minister cooperatively in the community, performing ministries together which cannot be accomplished as well or at all by individual churches; and to cooperate with all agencies seeking to promote the Spiritual and material well-being of the community. The first Chairman was Reverend Ed Denhaan.
From the beginning, the Council took a strong interest in corrections issues, religious education and chaplaincy, affordable housing, and communications via television, newspaper, and radio. In later years, issues related to seniors, homelessness and food banks were addressed in the minutes. The name of the organization changed to the Charlottetown Area Christian Council in 2002, and it is still active as of 2009.
