Scope and content

The fonds consists of an article written for the Canadian Journal of Medicine and a book entitled "Island Doctor: John Mackieson and medicine in nineteenth century Prince Edward Island". Both were written by Dr. Shephard and discuss the life and work of Dr. John Mackieson who practiced medicine in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island from 1821 until his death in 1885. Much of the content is based on Mackieson's medical manuscripts which include 2 sets of case records, a synopsis of medical conditions common in his day, and a formulary and on his daily personal diaries.
