Biographical history

Joseph Austin Trainor was born in Prince Edward Island on 31 December 1882, the son of Peter H. Trainor and Catherine E. McCarron. He was married to Patricia Monica MacLellan. Besides operating his own painting and interior decorating business, he was involved for many years in pre-Christmas radio work over radio station CFCY. A versatile singing comedian, actor, and director, he was instrumental in the development of amateur theatre in Prince Edward Island and received the Canadian Drama Award in 1937 for his contribution to this field. He directed and/or performed in countless plays, musicals, variety shows and concerts in Prince Edward Island's theatres of the day including the Opera House, the Prince Edward Theatre, the Peoples' Theatre and the Strand in Kensington. Amongst other amateur theatrical groups he was involved with the "Merry Minstrels", the Charlottetown Dramatic Club and the Little Theatre Guild. He died in Charlottetown on 31 August 1960.

Custodial history

Scope and content

This collection consists of a scrapbook containing programs and reviews of various theatrical performances given in Prince Edward Island between the years of 1906 and 1958. The programs themselves contain advertisements for many of the Island businesses operating at the time. Many pages have been filmed twice as some of the newspaper clippings have faded reducing legibility.
