Kinkora Dairying Association

Administrative history

The Kinkora Dairying Association was organized at a meeting in Kinkora Hall, Kinkora, Prince Edward Island on 26 December 1950. At this meeting it was decided to erect a new building to serve as a cheese factory and canvassers were chosen for each area to sell shares in the Association at $10 per share. Directors were elected at a second meeting on 3 January 1901. The Association operated the cheese factory for the next 55 years but did not succumb to the several suggestions over the years that a butter plant be added. Cheesemakers were paid at a rate per 100 pounds of cheese until the 1920s when they were paid a monthly salary. In the early years teas and picnics were held to raise money to off-set debt and through much of its existence the Association did not pay interest on its shares.

In 1924 there began in the province cooperative buying and selling by the Dairying Companies but the Kinkora Association did not become involved except to the extent of sending representatives to the annual Dairymen's convention in Charlottetown. By the late forties the Association's cheese production was down due to a shortage of patrons and insufficient milk as well as necessary repairs, poor sanitary conditions and competition from the creameries. By 1951 the Association was beginning to talk about changing from a joint stock company to a cooperative. Nevertheless they voted against joining Amalgamated Dairies choosing instead to keep operating their own factory. In a special meeting in February 1953 they voted in favour of making cheese in the summer and butter in the winter and to wind up the Kinkora Dairying Association Joint Stock Co. and become a cooperative. This decision was ratified at a special meeting in April of 1953 followed by a meeting later the same month to organize the Kinkora Dairying Cooperative Association Ltd.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the Annual and Directors' minutes of the Kinkora Dairying Association, 1900-1953 and those of the Kinkora Dairying Cooperative Association Limited from 1953-1973 including those of the Committee appointed to dispose of the assets of the Association. Minutes are primarily concerned with elections of officers, hauling of milk and cheese, production figures, interest on the stock, hiring of cheesemakers, new equipment and repairs or additions to the facility. In later years there is often a brief synopsis of remarks by speakers invited to address the group. There is also a list of initial shareholders in the latter company.
