Biographical history

Dr. Richard Gorden Lea was born in 1913, son of Premier Walter M. Lea (1874-1936) and Helena M. Rogerson of Tryon, Prince Edward Edward. By the 1990s Dr. Lea was a retired physician in Charlottetown and was the Chair of the Archives Committee of the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island in 1992. Dr. Lea conducted extensive research into the history of the medical profession in PEI. His published books include: "Island Medicine: An Historical Review", (Charlottetown: PEI Medical Society, 1964); "History of the Practice of Medicine in Prince Edward Island, 1700-1950", (Charlottetown: PEI Medical Society, 1964) and "The Polyclinic: 1925-1981" (1981).

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a memoir by Doctor R. G. Lea who writes of country life on Prince Edward Island during the 1920s and 1930s, including anecdotes of farm work and workers, home life and social customs, school days, family gatherings and traditions, and individual family members. This memoir also includes genealogical information on the Lea families of Tryon and Victoria.
