Biographical history

Lynda McFarlane, daughter of Alexander and Bernice McFarlane, is a resident of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. For many Ms. McFarlane was an employee of the Department of Education.

In 1876 Lynda's grandfather, Edwin McFarlane (1861-1952), son of Alexander McFarlane and Jeanette Johnston, went to live and work with his uncle James Johnston who owned a store and warehouse in Annandale. James had been in business with Daniel MacAulay since 1855 under the name MacAulay and Johnston. James and Edwin worked together for about ten years and ran the store under name Johnston and McFarlane. When James died in 1886, Edwin inherited the store. Edwin later took on John MacPhee as a partner and for a short time the business was known as McFarlane and MacPhee. Following MacPhee's retirement, the store was run under McFarlane's name.

In 1887, Edwin married Emma Jane Jenkins (1861-1946) of Little River. The couple went on to have four children, including Alexander J., Jeanette Johnston, Lilith Pearl and Mary Edna. Edwin's son Alexander (1890-1967) eventually took over the family business and ran the store until his death in 1967. Following his death, his wife, Mrs. Bernice McFarlane, continued to manage the store in Annandale, making it the longest operating store in the area.

Like many small costal communities in PEI, Annandale was also a site of shipbuilding in the nineteenth century. By 1867, James Johnston and Daniel MacAulay had built "O My", a forty-nine foot sailing vessel.
