Alexander Cavalié Mercer (1783-1869) was a soldier and painter originally from Hull, Yorkshire, England. Lieutenant Colonel Mercer was placed in charge of the artillery in Halifax, Nova Scotia between 1837 and 1842. It was during this period that he painted the view of the Charlottetown harbour.
