Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of two photographs of watercolours. The first, by A. C. Mercer, captures Charlottetown harbour mouth from George's Battery, 1 July 1839 and the second is entitled "Charlottetown on the Island of St. John 1778" by C. Randle.

Charlottetown, named after Queen Charlotte, was proposed as the capital of Prince Edward Island by Captain Holland in 1765, because of its excellent harbour, its central position, and its easy communication with the interior of the island as well as with the outside world. D. C. Harvey reports in an article in the "Canadian Geographic Journal" that Charlottetown was situated on one of the finest harbours in Canada, capable of receiving ships of heavy burden into a sheltered basin formed by the junction of the North and West rivers with the Hillsborough River.
