Historique

At a meeting in Charlottetown on Wednesday, 2 October 1889 the medical practitioners of Prince Edward Island voted to form the Prince Edward Island Medical Association. The following individuals were elected to the first Executive: Dr. Johnson of Charlottetown, President; Drs. McLaren (Brudenell), McKay (Summerside), and McLeod (Charlottetown), Vice-Presidents representing the three counties; Dr. S.R. Jenkins, Secretary; and Dr. F.D. Beer, Treasurer. Constitutional, credentials and legislation committees were named and membership was declared open to all those medical men who were or had been in practice and held a diploma from an accredited medical school in Great Britain, Canada, or the United States. Membership and annual fees were set at one dollar. Over the years the, Society has continued to regulate its profession, contribute to the drafting of health and medical legislation, and generally involve itself in all professional issues and all aspects of health care. In 1914/15 the name changed to the Prince Edward Medical Society and in 1938 the Society became a Division of the Canadian Medical Association.
