This series consists of correspondence from individuals or groups to the Governor requesting government resources, such as land grants, money, changes to, or completion of, public amenities. There are also documents from persons who have, or are hoping to, provide services to the Government (accounts and tenders). Supporting documentation, such as letters of recommendation, licenses of occupation, or small maps, is also included in some instances. Most of the petitions in this series were made by individuals seeking land; some of those whom were Loyalist soldiers. The information supplied varies but typically includes the name of the petitioner, the date, and a specified piece of land. However, in some cases petitioners went into great detail regarding their circumstances and included information on their families, occupation, personal history, even their state of health. The early petitions are handwritten. As of 1810 a printed form was available for petitioners seeking land grants although forms were not much used until 1827. The information supplied on the form includes: petitioner's name, address, occupation, place of origin, marital status, number of children, a description of the land being requested, and the date. This material is organized chronologically by year.
