Scope and content

This series is comprised of 3 daybooks and 3 ledgers. The earliest daybook dated 1878-1887 belonged to Elias Bishop. The others, covering the period 1911-1925, belonged to his son George. They reflect the daily transactions of the foundry business. The first ledger records accounts receivable from 1909-1924. The second records accounts payable, including copies of orders to suppliers, from 1927-1931. Both relate the financial matters of George Bishop's foundry. The third ledger dated 1935-1947 presents the daily business of the machine shop assumed by Thomas Bishop. Papers inserted into these books, with the exception of the 1935-1947 ledger, have been removed and filed in folders with a record of their original locations. There are also some loose ledger sheets, mainly for accounts receivable. Large format sheets (27cm x 43cm) exist for the years 1947-1950.

Arrangement

The small format sheets are loosely arranged by the year in which they appear to have been started with considerable overlap between files. Any inserted invoices or slips found among these sheets have been left as found
